Capturing smoke was more difficult than it appears to be.
We discovered that the trick was to light the smoke and not the candle with LOTS of additional lighting such as torches. To use a candle that actually produced lots of smoke - some are better than others. To use continuous shooting where possible but to also use a long exposure - about 2 seconds was optimal. ISO had to be low (100) or there was too much interference and the effect was not captured. Aperture as open as possible, averaging 5.6 for a good shot.
